A disappointed Erik ten Hag rued “missed opportunities” and admitted Manchester United “should have better” as they exited the Champions League and European competition for another season.

United’s 1-0 home defeat by Bayern Munich saw them not only go out of Europe’s premier club competition but also ensured they finished bottom of Group A meaning not even the Europa League awaits them after Christmas.

Kingsley Coman scored the only goal of the game in the second-half to secure a deserved win at a subdued Old Trafford with Ten Hag’s injury-depleted side mustering only a single shot on target.

He said: "I think the game was like this, for both sides: less chances, but I think there was a good intensity in the game and I think from our side we brought Bayern out of their rhythm of the game with the defensive organisation and pressing organisation, we did quite well, if not to say very well, especially the first part after the second half where we had also very good ball regains high up the pitch but we didn't take the benefit from it.

"Also, in that spell of the game we had a very good chance from build-up and the Bruno Fernandes shot just over the goal. We had our moments but just didn't take them.

"I look to my team and we had I think the opportunities in games where we were in winning positions, we scored many goals but then also you have to see we gave it away sometimes by individual errors — by not one player but by more players, not every time the same — they give the opponent opportunities to turn.

"We also had very good spells in games but we have to do better. The facts are we do not have enough points, we are disappointed as a group, as a manager, I am disappointed. We should have done better."
